Backpackers of the Philippines conducted an outreach program to the residents of Pag-asa Island in Kalayaan, Palawan on March 26 to 30, 2024.
Zcheeko Zacarias, one of the group’s administrators, said that they had been planning the outreach program for two years, and they deemed this year as the right moment to execute it.
“Seeing the genuine smiles on the faces of the people makes our efforts worth it. Although I had many chances to visit the island in past years, I decided that it would be best to bring our group and conduct the outreach together,” Zacarias said.
During the program, the group donated medicines, organized a feeding program, conducted storytelling sessions, distributed gifts, and arranged games for the children. They also provided programs for parents.
Part of the tour fee collected was allocated to the establishment of Pag-asa Island’s Multi-Faith Center.
A coastal cleanup initiative was also carried out.
Backpackers of the Philippines has been actively engaged in conducting outreach programs in various places and provinces across the country. They express their aspirations to continue such activities and revisit Pag-asa Island in the future.
