China, through its foreign ministry, on Sunday claimed that it was the United States that “invented” how to weaponize the global information space.
The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the remark in reaction to the US State Department report claiming that China invested billions of dollars to “spread disinformation globally.
The report said that China seeks to reshape the global information environment to its advantage.
Beijing has “invested billions of dollars to construct a global information ecosystem that promotes its propaganda and facilitates censorship and the spread of disinformation,” the same report read.
The US Department of State (DoS) report “is in itself disinformation as it misrepresents facts and truth,” the MoFA said in a statement shared by the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines.
“The relevant center of the US State Department which concocted the report is engaged in propaganda and infiltration in the name of global engagement,” it added.
“It is a source of disinformation and the command center of “perception warfare.”
The MoFA said the US was involved in Operation Mockingbird “which bribed and manipulated news media for propaganda purposes in the Cold War era.”
The US, China said, staged a video of the so-called “White Helmets” which was used as evidence to “wage wars of aggression in Iraq and Syria earlier this century.”
The MoFA also linked the US to the “enormous lie made up to smear China’s Xinjiang policy, facts have proven time and again that the US is an ’empire of lies’ through and through.”
“Even some in the US, such as Senator Rand Paul, acknowledged that the US government is the greatest propagator of disinformation in the history of the world,” the MoFA said.
“No matter how the US tries to pin the label of ‘disinformation’ on other countries, more and more people in the world have already seen through the US’s ugly attempt to perpetuate its supremacy by weaving lies into ’emperor’s new clothes’ and smearing others.”
