Metro Manila, Philippines— Vice President Leni Robredo is not opening her doors for a possible unification with rival former senator Bongbong Marcos amid the latter’s refusal to admit his crime and the atrocities committed under his father’s regime.

According to the presidential hopeful, discussions about unification should always be “based on justice.”

“Alam natin na mayroon pa siyang hindi pinapanagutan na mga ginawa niya, na mahirap makipagsundo dahil una walang pagtanggap,” Robredo said when the topic of reconciliation cropped up during an interview with DZRH.

“Itong klase ng pamamahala na nire-represent niya, hindi ito ‘yung klase ng pulitika at pamamahala na makakabuti sa bansa,” Robredo also said.

[Translation: We know he has yet to admit the things he has committed, making it difficult to reconcile because, firstly, there is no admission…This kind of governance that he represents is not the kind of politics and governance that will benefit the country.]

Robredo said the governance she is promoting is a “complete opposite” from that of Marcos.

“Kapag basta lang natin tinanggap ‘yung ganun dahil lang sa unification, ano ang binibigay nating mensahe sa tao? Na okay lang ‘yung mga abuses in the past? Na okay lang ‘yung corruption? Na okay lang convicted of a crime na hindi mo pa napapanagutan pero ino-offer mo ang sarili mo (for unification)?” Robredo said.

[Translation: When we accept just like that for the sake of unification, what message are we sending to the people? That the abuses in the past are okay? That corruption is okay? That it’s okay to be convicted of a crime for which you have not been held accountable but you are already offering yourself for unification?]
