Manila, Philippines — State seismologists on Wednesday said Mayon Volcano’s unrest has intensified after an increase in the number of volcanic earthquakes and rockfall events.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Mayon Volcano recorded seven volcanic earthquakes from 5 a.m. on Tuesday until 5 a.m. on Wednesday and 309 rockfall events.

On the other hand, the sulfur dioxide flux decreased to 149 tonnes a day.

Previously, Phivolcs said the volcano only saw one volcanic earthquake and 221 rockfall events with 723 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux.

Phivolcs classified Mayon Volcano under Alert Level 3 since last Thursday.

“Alert Level 3 is maintained over Mayon Volcano, which means that it is currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or even days,” Phivolcs said in its latest advisory.

The state seismologists said the unrest in Mayon Volcano could last for a few months based on their observations.
