LPA forms outside PAR, unlikely to develop into cyclone — Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines — A new low-pressure area (LPA) formed outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Friday but is unlikely to develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours, according to the state weather bureau.

In its morning weather forecast, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the LPA formed around 2 a.m. and was last spotted 2,090 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon.

Pagasa weather specialist Leanne Loreto said the weather disturbance is not expected to enter the PAR.

“Sa halip ito po’y mas lalayo pa sa ating bansa at kikilos pahilagang silangan kung saan ito ay maaaring sumama na lamang sa mas malaking sirkulasyon na malayo sa ating bansa at doon na lamang malusaw,” Loreto said.

(Instead, it will move further away from our country and move northeast, where it may join a larger movement away from our country and only then dissipate.)

But the extension of the LPA is expected to bring rain showers in the eastern sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas.

In a separate advisory, Pagasa said the trough of the LPA is expected to bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms this Friday:

  • Bicol Region
  • Eastern Visayas
  • Quezon
  • Marinduque
  • Romblon

Cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms are also expected to be experienced over Palawa, Mindanao, and the rest of Visayas due to the intertropical convergence zone, or “the line where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet.”

Pagasa also said cloudy skies with rain are expected over the following areas brought by the northeasterly windflow:

  • Cagayan Valley
  • Apayao
  • Kalinga
  • Mountain Province
  • Ifugao
  • Aurora

As for Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms are expected due to localized thunderstorms.

No gale warning is in effect in any seaboard of the country.
