Former President Rodrigo Duterte over the weekend urged against amending the 1987 Constitution to favor the current administration, Unang Balita reported on Monday.
In a prayer rally in Cebu, Duterte said the six-year term for the president is already enough.
“Huwag baguhin ang Konstitusyon pabor sa kasalukuyang nakaupo at maghahangad pa ng karagdagang termino. Kumportable na tayo sa anim na taon. One term, let us stick to that,” Duterte said in his native dialect.
(Don’t amend the Constitution to favor the president who would want an additional term. We are already comfortable with six years. One term, let us stick to that.)
Duterte reportedly added that he is in favor of amending the economic provisions of the current Constitution or even changes in the term of the president as long as President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will ensure that he will no longer seek another termMarcos earlier said that only the economic provisions of the Constitution will be tackled in the latest push for Charter change (Cha-cha), adding the time is not yet right to discuss political provisions. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
