MANILA – The Chinese Embassy in Manila and the Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. donated on Saturday PHP3.5 million worth of relief goods to families affected by the onslaught of the southwest monsoon and Super Typhoon Carina in Manila.

The Embassy said at least 3,500 relief packages were given to the beneficiary families during the donation drive.

Each package contains rice, canned food, and noodles as immediate relief to the victims.

“I was glad to deliver the first batch of relief packs to the residents of Barayon affected by the typhoon together with Manila Vice Mayor Yul Servo,” Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian during the distribution in Tondo, Manila.

“We hope these humble donations would be of help to those families in need. Hand-in-hand, we stand together in trying times, and pray for early resumption of normal life in the affected areas,” he added.

The combined effects of the southwest monsoon, intensified by Super Typhoon Carina, brought heavy to intense rains across the Philippines on Wednesday.

In Metro Manila, torrential rains caused widespread flooding.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported Friday that the combined effects of Carina and the southwest monsoon disrupted the lives of 1.3 million people nationwide and killed 14.
