MANILA, Philippines — More than Over 3.7 million individuals have been affected by the southwest monsoon and tropical cyclones Luis, Maymay across the country, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Thursday.
In its latest report as of 6 a.m., the NDRRMC said the weather systems distressed a total population of 3,733,883 persons or more than a million families (1,087,246).
The victims live in the National Capital Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), Bicol Region, Western Visayas and Zamboanga Peninsula.
The council also reported that 53,570 individuals or 15,017 families are seeking temporary shelter inside 553 evacuation centers.
The weather systems have destroyed 1,339 houses, with estimated cost of damage to infrastructure amounting to P2.6 billion (P2,647,707,229) and to agriculture at P347 million (P347,372,392).
Meanwhile, the agency maintained that 21 individuals were killed due to the weather systems.
Of this figure, 15 came from Benguet due to landslides in La Trinidad, Baguio and Atok.
Three fatalities from Rizal were reported, where two individuals died in Rodriguez due to a rockslide while one in Antipolo died due to a fallen tree.
The remaining three deaths came from Batangas due to drowning, electrocution and landslide.
The NDRRMC added of 14 the individuals injured, 11 came from Benguet due to landslide while one injury was tallied each from Ilocos Sur, Rizal and Cavite due to landslide, strong currents and vehicular accident.
The council also noted that a total of P458 million (P458,024,188) worth of assistance had been provided to the calamity victims. /apl
