Schools will remain shut on Friday (August 7, 2026) as several local government units (LGUs) in Luzon announced the suspension of onsite classes due to the ongoing bad weather attributed to the southwest monsoon (habagat) enhanced by Typhoon ‘Dolphin’ outside the Philippines.

This developed even as the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) lifted tropical cyclone wind signals by late Thursday evening when tropical depression ‘Maymay’ (international name ‘Kujira’) moved further away from land.

In an 11:00 p.m. update, PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina said heavy rainfall is still expected by Friday as they continue to monitor the movements of both ‘Maymay’ and ‘Dolphin,’ which is now responsible for enhancing ‘habagat.’

According to Badrina, while ‘Dolphin’ is not expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility and directly affect the country, it will continue intensifying the southwest monsoon through the weekend and rainy weather will persist largely across Luzon.

‘Maymay,’ on the other hand, maintained its strength but is forecast to continue weakening and may be downgraded into a remnant low on Friday. PAGASA said it will move generally eastward until it merges into the larger circulation of Typhoon ‘Dolphin.’

Its center was last estimated at 290 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora, moving at at 35 km per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

“It must be emphasized that heavy rainfall and severe winds may still be experienced in localities outside the landfall point and the forecast confidence cone,” PAGASA said in its 11:00 p.m. advisory.

As such, many LGUs sustained their stay-at-home orders for the safety of students. Classes in both public and private schools at all levels in the following areas (except in some locations) were suspended onsite and/or advised to consider alternative learning arrangements:
