Australia has passed its first major vaccination milestone, with over 70 per cent of the country’s population aged over 16 being fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
The milestone means Australia can now move into phase B of the national plan.
“It allows us to really consider what else we can be doing to get back to some sort of COVID normal,” Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly said.

The first dose vaccination rate is currently at 85.5 per cent and continuing to climb.
Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said just over 16 per cent of Australians aged between 12-15 are now fully vaccinated.
Mr Hunt hailed the high level of vaccination in the ACT, which stands at 98.1 per cent.
“It is one of the most highly vaccinated societies in the world,” he said.
More than 93 per cent of Australians aged over 50 have had at least one dose, Mr Hunt said, and 97.8 per cent of Australians aged over 70 have had one dose, with 86.2 per cent being fully vaccinated.
GPs, pharmacies and state-run hubs — including drive-through clinics — are all doing vaccinations with AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna. You can make a vaccination booking here.
Australians aged 60 and over are now able to book both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines from GPs and pharmacies across the country.
Here are the latest state and territory breakdowns according to the Australian Government.
The numbers are for eligible adults as of October 20, 2021.
New South Wales
Official data shows 92.5 per cent of people have had a single jab, while 82.3 per cent are fully vaccinated.
Victoria
In Victoria, 89.2 per cent of residents have rolled up their sleeves once.
A total of 69.3 per cent are fully vaccinated, with the 70 per cent target due to trigger the end of lockdown for Melbourne on Thursday.

Queensland
The Sunshine State has given 73.2 per cent of eligible people one dose, and 58.1 per cent have had both.
The state is now doing jabs at Bunnings.
South Australia
South Australia has had 77.2 per cent of eligible residents have their first dose, while a milestone 60 per cent of them are fully dosed.
Western Australia
In Western Australia, 74.3 per cent have had their first jab and 57 per cent per cent are fully vaccinated.
Australian Capital Territory
In the ACT, more than 95 per cent of people have had one dose, according to the Federal Government’s stats.
So far, 82.8 per cent have been fully vaccinated.
Northern Territory
In the NT, 71.7 per cent have had at least one dose, and 59.8 per cent are fully vaccinated.
Tasmania
Tasmania has had 85.1 per cent of eligible residents receive one dose, while 70 per cent are fully jabbed.
